Synopsis

This book is a study of the evidence of the antiquity of man in Britain. It starts from the time that Julius Caesar came to Britain in 54 BC, and goes back to the start of the Palaeolithic Era. The author draws on archaeological, anthropological, and geological evidence to support the premise that man has occupied Britain for far longer than previously thought. The author also compares the large collection of specimens in their possession with stone implements still in use, or until recently employed by savage people, to understand the various purposes for which they were designed and fashioned. By considering the state of culture of certain savage races selected for this purpose, from many others, the reader is enabled to realise the probable mode of life, conditions, and culture of the river drift men similarly situated as to climate and other conditions.
