Synopsis
It was during the Vietnam war when the author landed in the land of the free at the most liberal university and listened to the fiery antiwar speeches of Herbert Marcuse and Angela Davis. He was coming from a small country on the shores of the Black Sea where an Orwellian experiment to control the entire population of a country was taking place. His stories are about transformations, from the barbaric times brought about to his country by the end of the Second World War and then to life in academia, in the US and Europe as a computer science professor. Some of the stories are about the information revolution that cracked the door open to an underworld of darkness and is threatening human society with dangers it is unprepared to face, and the suffocating rate of disruptive technologies that have dramatically increased not only the danger of Valhalla's destruction, but much more.
About the Author
Dan Cristian Marinescu is a Romanian American academic and researcher.
He graduated in 1965 from the College of Electronics and Telecommunications of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, specialty Physics Engineering. In September 1965 Dan Marinescu joined the Institute for Atomic Physics of the Romanian Academy as Junior Researcher, working on preamplifiers for semiconductor detectors used in nuclear reactions.
In 1969 Dan Marinescu received an MS in EECS from University of California at Berkeley. From September 1969 he designed a system for multidimensional EEG at U.C. Berkely. After defending his Ph.D. dissertation in 1976, he joined the Computing Laboratory at Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Soviet Union working on high performance scientific computing for a year and a half.
He left Romania in 1980 and was visiting scientist at GSI Darmstadt working on a system for data acquisition and analysis for superheavy elements discovery. In May 1984 he joined the Computer Science Department at Purdue University, and after 17 years at Purdue, in August 2001 he accepted an offer from the Computer Science Department at University of Central Florida. He retired in May 2022.
Dan Marinescu published more than 220 papers in scietific journals and conference proceedings in the area of parallel and distributed computing, resource management, and complex systems. He has also published two books in quantum computing and quantum information throry, a book on cloud computing now at its 3rd edition, one on workflow management, and one on complex sytems.
Dan Marinescu had visiting appointments at IBM Research in 1985, Institute for Information Sciences Beijing in 1992, Supercomputer Systems Division of Intel in 1993, Multi- Media Systems, Dresden, Germany, 1997, INRIA Paris, France 1998, 2000, 2005, 2006, University College Cork, Ireland 2007 -2008, Universidad Technica Federico Santa Maria, Chile, 2012, and National University of Tucuman, Argentina, in 2014.
