The function of the narrative is to form a framework for an idealized picture of life in Lithuania at the beginning of the century. The poem's intense national feeling has not prevented its recognition in other countries. it has been translated into every European language, and three English versions have preceded the one now offered. Pan Tadeusz is not a narriwly patriotic poem.
