麦克阿瑟1899年以第一名考入西点军校，毕业后在工程兵部队任职。1917年赴法参加第一次世界大战。此后历任西点军校校长、驻菲律宾美军司令。1930年晋升为陆军参谋长。1936年被授为菲律宾陆军元帅，翌年退出现役。太平洋战争爆发后于1941年重入现役，出任远东美军总司令。1942年被调往澳大利亚，不久出任西南太平洋盟军总司令。他受命指挥新几内亚战役、菲律宾战役。1944年晋升陆军五星上将。1945年被任命为驻日盟军最高统帅，执行对日占领任务，随后代表盟国接受日本投降。在占领日本期间，全面推行民主改革，对日本战后历史产生重大影响。1950年朝鲜战争爆发后任"联合国军"总司令，指挥仁川登陆，越过三八线，一度向鸭绿江推进。次年因军事失利及违抗政府指令企图扩大战争被免职。1952年参与美国共和党总统初选，但未胜出。同年起任兰德公司董事长。1964年因胆结石去世，终年84岁。
