作者吕大炯出生于上海。在北京上高中期间连续获得六枚学习优秀奖章，并被评为北京市三好学生。1962年毕业于南开大学无线电电子学专业，并于同年进入中国科学院物理研究所光学研究室工作，1985年转往中国科学院空间科学与应用研究中心。在中国科学院卢嘉锡院长与技术科学部王大珩主任的主导下，并在五位学部委员的推荐下，被评为副研究员。1984年兼任中华新技术开发研究所所长与兼职研究员，同时任中国边缘科学研究会理事长。1985年开始筹建并负责中国科学院应用物理与地震学实验室。1976年7月28日唐山发生了7.8级大地震，现场状况惨不忍睹，当场死亡24万老百姓。吕大炯决心转为研究地震预报：从唐山大地震后的第12天开始，在密云水库附近的山洞内安装了一套高灵敏度的地震前兆仪器（包括激光锁相应变仪，基岩地电记录仪和电磁辐射包络记录仪）。同时也利用密云水库管理处气象站及中央气象局的气象观测资料，进行了地震预报的研究。在研究期间，明确提出了突变前兆在临震预报中的重要意义，以较为充足的数据确定了地震前兆的"全球"性质，并且给出了能够记录到与远震相对应的"临震前兆"的阈值条件。强调指出前兆与地震之间的时间间隔不是一个常量，而是具有某些一定周期的变量。发现了和"有效地震"的发震时间具有准确对应关系的现象，根据这些现象确定了极值重合法，并用于地震发震时间的预报；提出了前兆模式及综合前兆模式的概念，并将其用于震中位置的预报......在上述基础上，归纳总结出突变前兆的时间，空间，时间分辨与空间分辨等四项特征以及远近震前兆相关定律。在世界上首先实现了对某些强烈远震的震中，震级和震时三要素的成功预报，同时也确定了能够预报远震的条件。对利用突变前兆预报地震的成功率进行了估算，并在实际预报过程中进行了验证。对远震，近震与地方震的虚报和漏报问题进行了讨论。通过一系列努力，从而建立起临震预报唯象物理学的框架。1993年吕大炯研究员移居美国。一方面大力科普地震可预测的知识，包括接受美国电视台采访并发表演说，出版英文版的科普读物【地震预报可以比天气预报准确】等；另一方面着重于地震预报的理论研究：揭示了地震预报可以比天气预报准确是以三条物理规律作为其理论基础。同时声称拥有两项地震预报领域中的知识产权。2018年日本综合科学研究所聘请吕大炯为名誉教授。
