This book is a basic guide showing parents how to manage the online experiences of their children by providing detailed descriptions of common risks associated with online activity, as well as the steps parents and children must take to reduce risks related to online predators, loss of privacy, and malicious software. The book has chapters showing parents how to protect their family s online privacy and security, chapters on how to use email, search engines, and other online services, as well as chapters show how to keep negative influences like inappropriate material, online bullies, and child predators from becoming a problem online. The book also includes sample Internet use agreements that parents can use for setting online rules and explaining how those rules support the family s most important values. There are also over 200 free online resources described in the book, including free software and web sites that a child can use to help with school.
About the Author
Todd Curtis is a parent and a published author who more than a decade ago created the Web s most popular airline safety site, AirSafe.com. He holds a PhD in aviation risk assessment from the Union Institute, as well as engineering degrees from MIT, the University of Texas, and Princeton. His aviation safety work has been featured by numerous news organizations, including the New York Times, and he has appeared on CNN, CBS, Fox News, Discovery Channel, the BBC, and National Public Radio. With this book, he combines his insights as a father, engineering risk assessment expert, and online pioneer to create a clear and easy-to-use guide for managing and enhancing a child s online experiences. Previously, he has published and presented a number of technical papers in the areas of aviation risk assessment and also was the author of the 2000 book Understanding Aviation Safety Data.
