Parents who want a concise guide will get more than they bargained for with this book. The discussion ideas and activities are there, and many of them are very good; the important issues (illusion versus reality, stereotypes, violence, commercials) are also there. Unfortunately, winding in and around this practical information is a review of the research, which many parents may find tedious and extraneous. References to research are not numbered, and the discussion does not always distinguish between correlation and cause and effect. The authors, respected authorities in their field, may have better left a more thorough discussion to a separate publication. Parents may also find that many of the activities require the time and structure that are more available in a school setting. Recommended with reservations for school and public libraries that already have one or more publications in this area.
