This is third edition of a classic is the standard study of the parochial administration in England. Mr. Tate’s purpose in writing the book in 1946, was to encourage research into local and family history by describing the range of civil and ecclesiastical documents that occur in parish archives; the ‘parish chest’. Many examples are printed, transcribed and related to the conditions and laws that gave rise to them and to the evolving English society whose relics they are. His knowledge of the literature has led to the better understanding of parish records.
