The Parlimentary Register or History of the Proceedings and Debates of the House of Commons

The Parlimentary Register Or History Of The Proceedings And Debates Of The House Of Commons by J Debrett. The Parlimentary Register collects late eighteenth?century debates and proceedings of the British House of Commons, tracing how Parliament wrestled with wartime policy, civil liberties, and the machinery of governance. The provided material frames discussions on army expenditures, militia organization, and measures to curb seditious meetings and publications, while also tracking a web of petitions and public meetings across towns. Prominent participants include Pitt the Younger, Fox, Sheridan, Dundas, Wilberforce, and other ministers and MPs who argue for national security alongside civil rights. Central tensions revolve around parliamentary privilege, the proper handling of politically charged writings, and the optics of public opinion as expressed through petitions. The text also illuminates parliamentary procedure, including attempts to prosecute or discipline pamphleteers, the management of petitions, and the role of committees. Overall, it offers a detailed snapshot of wartime parliamentary culture, the politics of reform, and the oversight of military and financial policy in late 18th?century Britain.
