Contemporary sheep, blind rules to boards, blind fillets to spine, blind tooling to board edges. Light rubbing, a few small nicks and some soiling and staining to boards, which are bowed, moderate rubbing to extremities, small chip and tear near foot of spine, which has a few small wormholes, a few nicks to board edges, corners bumped and lightly worn, front pastedown loose, rear pastedown lacking, ink annotation and small doodle dated 1701 to front endleaves, front free endpaper lightly edgeworn and detaching at head but secure, early ink annotation (a brief table of contents) to rear free endpaper. Light toning to interior, first signature and following few leaves loosening slightly but secure, occasional faint dampstaining to last 25 or so leaves, early underlining to a few pages. $750. * Only edition. Meriton was a lawyer and a prodigious writer on a wide range of legal and non-legal topics. Born in the North Riding of Yorkshire, he is also remembered for his dialect poem The Praise of Yorkshire Ale (1683). The Parson's Monitor, his only work on ecclesiastical law, covers a wide range of topics such as tithes, conformity and the articles of religion, and simony.
