Part First Of A Supplement To The Cybele Britannica: To Be Continued Occasionally As A Record Of Progressive Knowledge Concerning The Distribution Of Plants In Britain by Hewett Cottrell Watson. This privately printed 1860 supplement to the Cybele Britannica presents 38 Local Floras condensed into two general lists, detailing Britain's plant distribution with geographic subdivisions. Watson aims to advance botanical geography beyond flora descriptions by mapping species by location and altitude, and by inviting observers to contribute new records. The volume includes reception material and Watson's responses to critiques, discussions on the nature of species and genera, and reflections on Darwinian ideas. It introduces the Subprovincial Distribution scheme, dividing Britain into 18 provinces and 38 sub-provinces to tabulate presence and absence across districts. It emphasizes rigorous citation of localities, and it outlines the practical utility of future supplements and the circulation of Part First to provincial botanists.
