Parturition Without Pain: a Code of Directions for Escaping from the Primal Curse

Parturition Without Pain: A Code Of Directions For Escaping From The Primal Curse by Martin Luther Holbrook is a nineteenth-century hygienic manual advocating a preventive, healthful regimen for childbearing. It argues that pain in childbirth can be largely avoided through preconception and gestational practices: regular moderate exercise, a fruit-based diet designed to reduce earth content in the food, careful bathing (including sitz-bath), avoidance of stimulants, and attention to prenatal ailments. The work discusses the role of mothers’ mind and temperament, the influence of the husband, and ethical considerations such as abortion and celibacy, before presenting practical chapters on healthful pregnancy, exercise, dress, and nursing, along with anaesthetics as a last resort. Drawing on medical authorities and case anecdotes, the book promotes motherhood as a vital, healthful, and moral enterprise and argues for natural, preparatory methods to ease labor and reduce risk. It reflects Hydropathic and reform movements of its era.
