A Pastor's Sketches, or Conversations With Anxious Inquirers Respecting the Way of Salvation Volume 1

A Pastor's Sketches, Or Conversations With Anxious Inquirers Respecting The Way Of Salvation by Ichabod Smith Spencer is a collection of true-life portraits drawn from the author’s pastoral ministry. Structured as sketches and dialogues, it presents cases of anxious inquirers seeking peace with God, and the paths by which ministers help them through questions about knowledge, belief, the existence of God, the Holy Spirit, and the means of salvation. The book traverses themes of faith, doubt, despair, and conversion, through episodes such as 'The Young Irishman,' 'Faith Everything,' 'Waiting for the Holy Spirit,' and 'The Last Step.' Spencer emphasizes a practical, Scripture-centered approach, warning against mere excitement or reliance on human testimony, and arguing that true assurance comes from repentance, faith in Christ, and the Holy Spirit's work. While not a single narrative, these sketches aim to illustrate common spiritual struggles, to guide inquirers, and to assist ministers in applying biblical truth to diverse human hearts. Preface notes these are brief portraits, reflecting ordinary experiences in revival: true religion is knowledge of God through Scripture, not sensationalism.
