The Path I Dared to Walk

This memoir chronicles the life of a neurosurgeon from the pivotal decision in medical school to pursue this demanding specialty, through the grueling years of training, to a fulfilling career as an academic neurosurgeon. The author describes his evolution from a fledgling physician to a seasoned practitioner, and ultimately into retirement and his final days.

Case vignettes capture moments of challenge, triumph and heartbreaking loss. Personal reflections and glimpses of family life add intimacy and warmth to a life lived both inside and beyond the hospital.

A forward written by a former student and distinguished colleague introduces the memoir, while an afterword from the author’s wife brings it to a poignant close. This memoir is more than a story of a surgeon, it is a portrait of a life defined by perseverance, commitment, compassion and an enduring devotion to healing.
