This theological reflection on love begins with literary examples to illustrate the nature of perfect love as a self-giving recognition of others. Avoiding traditional jargon, Allen (Princeton Theological Seminary) examines fundamental Christian doctrines (creation, repentance, faith in the resurrection) as life-giving realities that provide nourishment and hope in the context of God's perfect love. The author leaves dangling too many of the numerous questions he raises, but clergy and lay readers will find new and familiar interpretations expressed in fresh language that stimulates and enlightens. This book was originally published as Finding Our Father (John Knox Pr., 1974); this revised edition includes a new preface by the author.
