About the Author

Jim Hofferberth was born in Dayton, Ohio, studied engineering at Purdue, and did his graduate work in Business Organization and Law at Ohio State. In he 60's, he helped develop emergency escape systems for military aircraft. He also did research on escape from spacecraft during super-orbital reentry. In mid career, he served as Director, Office of Crashworthiness, NHTSA, where he had responsibility for development of many of the Safety Standards to prevent crash injuries in cars, trucks and buses. He also served as spokesperson for NHTSA regarding the cost-benefit implications of the safety standards. He retired from NHTSA in 1993 as Director, Vehicle Research and Test Center. During his career, he acquired a unique view of health care, which provides the basis for "The Only Path to Survival for the Health Care System". In 2002 Mr. Hofferberth again retired as Skipper of the Sailing Vessel Wunschtraum, following an 8-year circumnavigation with his wife, Marita.
