The spine features two gilt-decorated/lettered brown leather labels (tiny chips). The cover is only very lightly rubbed. Internal condition is Fine. Hinges, inner and outer, are perfect. NO owner's name or bookplate. All pages are crisp and clean. NO foxing. Top edge gilt. All gilt stamping is still bright and shiny. With photogravure frontispiece reproducing illustration by F.T. Richards (tissue-guard is text printed), illustrated titlepage (printed in red and black), and decorative chapter head and tail pieces. This is one of the 5 volumes in the Leather-stocking Tales saga featuring Natty Bumppo, aka Hawkeye, intepid wilderness hunter and scout. "Cooper was paid £500 by Bentley for the English publication from which £200 was deducted to cover losses sustained by Bentley on The History of the Navy in 1839.
