It is four people, eleven moments, each approached through a real hymn, translated fresh for these pages and read back against the hardest hours of the men who sang them, the way the devotional tradition has always remembered those hours.
The stakes are entirely visceral:
- A minister spends a king's ransom on a temple instead of horses. By morning, jackals are loose in the stable yard, and he has to explain himself.
- A child of three, points at the sky and sings an answer to a question nobody actually asked him.
- A bridegroom is interrupted mid-ceremony by a stranger claiming an unverifiable debt. He calls the man a madman to his face, minutes before his whole life breaks open.
- A man loses his sight over a promise he broke while knowing he was breaking it. He gets it back one eye at a time, years apart, at two different temples.
These stories are told the way my grandfather told them to me, on railway platforms, waiting between cities, years before I understood what I had actually been handed. The book follows Appar, Sambandar, Sundarar, and Manikkavasagar through a kiln, a court, a broken promise, and a resignation.
Every chapter is scene and song first, reflection second, over almost as soon as it starts. What's left afterward is one question worth carrying: what kind of person keeps singing when every reasonable option is to stop?

Returns Policy
We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.
Returns requested beyond this time will not be authorised.
