Introduces the discipline of child and adolescent psychiatry for both graduate level students and postgraduate professionals. Together, the two volumes are intended to establish the basis for the practice of child psychiatry by covering the essentials of development. The First Volume treats normal development, while Volume 2 deals with dysfunctional development (psychopathology), and the precursors to normal or abnormal development are clearly detailed. Avoiding jargon and in-group language, coverage begins with a detailed explication of the role of genetics in behavioral and psychiatric disorders and the role of the fetal environment. Also covered are brain anatomy, caregiving and the effects of early separation, then the several stages of child growth: infancy (and the roots of personality), toddlerhood, the pre-school period, grade school years, puberty and adolescence.
