Sarah W. Blackstone, PhD, is president of Augmentative Communication, Inc. She has authored multiple texts in the augmentative and alternative communication field as well as articles in Augmentative Communication News. She is a participant in the Rehabilitation Engineering and Research Center in Communication Enhancement where she has recently coordinated the patient/provider communication group. Dr. Blackstone has practiced at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and in a private practice that serves children and adults with complex communication needs.
David R. Beukelman, PhD, is the Barkley Professor of Communication Disorders at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has served as director of research and education of the Communication Disorders Division, Munroe-Meyer Institute of Genetics and Rehabilitation at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. As a research partner in the Rehabilitation Engineering and Research Center for Communication Enhancement, he has focused on communication supports for adults with acquired medical conditions. He serves as a senior researcher and clinical consultant for the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska. He coauthored the textbooks, Augmentative and Alternative Communication: Supporting Children and Adults with Complex Communication Needs and Management of Motor Speech Disorders in Children and Adults, and also coedited the book, Augmentative Communication Strategies for Adults with Acute and Chronic Medical Conditions.
Kathryn M. Yorkston, PhD, is a professor of rehabilitation medicine and head of the speech pathology division within the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center. She is the coauthor of two textbooks: Management of Speech and Swallowing in Degenerative Diseases and Management of Motor Speech Disorders of Children and Adults. She is currently the chair of the writing committee for practice guidelines in dysarthria for the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences.
