Patriots and Bastards

Patriots and Bastards by Aurora Madaula is a compelling exploration of the turbulent journey of Basque nationalism against the backdrop of General Franco’s dictatorship and shifting international politics. The book takes readers through pivotal moments like World War Two, the World Basque Congress of 1956, the spirited debates at the IV Conferences of the European Movement in Munich, and the ideological clashes between Manuel Irujo and other Basque nationalist factions like ETA. This rich narrative reveals the resilience of the Basque government-in-exile, as they strategized to preserve legitimacy, forge vital international alliances, and lay the foundation for a return to freedom.
Through gripping stories of defiance, such as the Burgos trial of 1970, Madaula brings to life the sacrifices and complexities faced by the Basque people during the dark years of Franco’s dictatorship. The narrative captures the passion and persistence of those striving for autonomy, set against the challenges of reconciling independence aspirations with collaboration alongside the Spanish Republican government-in-exile.
The author vividly portrays the journey from exile to the eventual transition to democracy, where dreams of a free and independent Basque Country became a possibility once again. By intertwining personal stories with significant historical events, “Patriots and Bastards” not only chronicles the political evolution of a people but also offers a powerful testament to the unbreakable spirit of those who refuse to be silenced. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the intersections of nationalism, international politics, and the struggle for identity.
