Very slight shelf wear to edges of D/J. bumped corners Did Somerset Maugham's ironic description of himself as 'but a story-teller' do justice to his formidable gifts? Did he ever succeed in out-growing the attitudes of Edwardian England with its acute conscionsness of the conduct proper to a gentleman? Was he really ignored by the intelligentsia, as he often observed? These are some of the questions discussed by Anthony Curtis in this critical portrait of the writer who was the most popular literary artist of modern times. 278 pp.
