The Pattern Problem: How Organisations Learn to Stay the Same

Most organisations don’t have a change problem. They have a pattern problem.

Strategies change. Structures change. Leaders change. Yet familiar behaviours and outcomes keep returning.

The Pattern Problem explores why.

Gemma Toner shows how organisations learn from repeated experience: what happens when people challenge, take risks, make mistakes, ask for approval or try something new. Over time, those experiences become expectations — and those expectations shape what feels sensible next.

Rather than starting with behaviour and asking how to change it, this book looks beneath the surface at the patterns, stories, systems and leadership signals that keep recreating the present.

It also shows how movement begins, and how readers can start identifying and testing patterns in their own organisations.

A practical, thought-provoking book for leaders, change practitioners and anyone trying to understand why organisations so often return to what they already know.
