About this Item

Description:

Number of Volumes: 3 Three volumes. Original blue cloth binding with blue and gilt art nouveau decoration on spines. Board exposed along edge in one volume, and some scuffing to boards, but otherwise in very good condition. Pages are unmarked, and edges are deckled. Gilt top-edge to pages. Small stains to pastedowns. Some pages are uncut. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, War and Peace comprises both a fictional narrative and chapters in which Tolstoy discusses history and philosophy. An early version was published serially beginning in 1865, after which the entire book was rewritten and published in 1869. It is regarded, with Anna Karenina, as Tolstoy's finest literary achievement, and it remains an internationally praised classic of world literature. The book chronicles the French invasion of Russia and its aftermath during the Napoleonic era. It uses five interlocking narratives following different Russian aristocratic families to illustrate Napoleon's impact on Tsarist society. Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910), known in English as Leo Tolstoy, is one of the giants of Russian literature. Constance Garnett (1861-1946) was an English translator of nineteenth-century Russian Literature, completing 71 translations within her lifetime. She met Tolstoy while visiting Russia during her translation of Turgenev. A self-taught translator, her translation of War and Peace was praised by some, including Joseph Conrad and Ernest Hemingway, but to more contemporary authors her translations are critiqued for their somewhat homogenous Victorian voice. Hardcover, three volumes, very good condition. Vol. 1 is 516 pages, vol. 2 is 518 pages, vol. 3 is 502 pages; octavo. Seller Inventory # 1704925
