For that stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth feeling, young gourmands might want to consult The Peanut Butter Cookbook for Kids by Judy Ralph and Ray Gompf, illustrated by Craig Terlson; the more than 45 recipes run the gooey gamut from "Super Snacks" (Peanutty Hot Chocolate, PB Granola) to "Hale and Hearty" (Orange Salad with PB Dressing, PB Spicy Chicken and Noodles) and "Party Pizazz" (PB Banana Cookies, PB Dessert Pizza); (Hyperion, paper $10.95, 96p, ages 8-up ISBN 0-7868-1028-9 Sept.).

Gr. 5^-7. If you think peanut butter is only for sandwiches and baked goods, think again. Ralph and Gompf have assembled a truly amazing assortment of recipes using the "third great American snack food behind hot dogs and pizza," including soups, main dishes, beverages, and, of course, snacks and desserts. A few will definitely challenge the taste buds--" peanutty nachos" with salsa; peanut butter with mayonnaise and green onion in pita bread. Instructions are brief and step-by-step (unfortunately, they sometimes flow over onto a third page) and are amply illustrated with cheerful, colorful cartoon drawings that give an adequate idea of the processes involved. An icon, identified in the introduction, is used throughout the text to alert young cooks to the need for adult help, and a few words about nutrition round matters out. Not a first purchase, but fun for kids comfortable in the kitchen and passionate about peanut butter. Stephanie Zvirin
