First thus. With an introduction by Austin Dobson. 8vo. pp298. Illustrated with black and white line drawings by Hugh Thomson. All edges gilt. Dark blue buckram beautifully embossed in gilt with designs of Butterflies, Cherubs holding masks and a vignette of Peg Woffington on front board. Spine decorated in gilt. Very good. Charles Reade was born at Ipsden, Oxfordshire. He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he became a Fellow of the College. He became a dramatist and novelist, and during the 19th Century he was one of England's most popular novelists. He is best known for his work "The Cloister and the Hearth." Hugh Thomson, (1860-1920), was born in Coleraine, Co. Derry. He became one of Ireland's best and most popular of Irish Illustrators. He took up work with the publishers Macmillan and Co. in Lonond, and joined some of the best writers and Illustrators of his day.
