The profile is of a woman with the look most closely associated with Charles Gibson, but underneath is written in ink, Mrs. Bogart, which leads us to believe that the profile was the work of Maude Humphrey, the mother of the actor, Humphrey Bogart, and best known today as a book illustrator who specialized in babies and young children, but also prolific as a portraitist of pretty women such as this one, who resembles the woman on not a few postcards for which Maud Humphrey did the artwork. We don't think Maud Humphrey signed her name like it is written here necessarily, and we think quite likely someone else wrote the name in. We know the woman whose profile is drawn doesn't resemble Maud Humphrey, so it is not a portrait of the artist. And it is certainly possible the name was written in because the profile was copied from a Maud Humphrey painting. Still, the fact that the artwork is on the type of card that a commercial artist would have used leads us to believe that this piece is from the actual hand of Maud Humphrey. Whatever the case, it is an appealing profile, even with the browning of the edges and other scattered soiling. The board measures 25.5 by 30 cm.

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
