Synopsis:

When I first thought of this book, I planned it purely as a book foramusement - a hundred chess puzzles to solve if you could. Thisremains its basic idea, and the book can be perfectly well used forthis and nothing more. However, when one writes a book it beginsto some extent to take charge and I have been unable to preventother features from creeping in.Firstly, I have added a fairly long introductory section on thebasic elements of tactical play and combinations. Provided youdon't expect too much from this, it should be helpful if you are aninexperienced player- it should at least give you some idea of whatis going on. And secondly, in the Test Papers I have added a competitive element for those who enjoy testing their skill. Everyonewho has worked through the first seven sets of positions with somemeasure of success should be able at least to have a good shot at thefirst of the three test sets. Each set of ten positions is accompanied by a section of hintsfor those who have got stuck on a problem, and then the solutions.I suggest that you should give yourself a good five minutes' studyof a position before you consider looking at the hints, and onlyuse them when you are sure you won't be able to solve the positionwithout help. And if you do use the hints, then make a real effortto solve the position with their help before turning to the solutions. In collecting the positions for this book, I have drawn on a largenumber of sources - and I have mercilessly plundered my ownweekly column in the Sunday Times. A list of the main books andmagazines to which I am indebted follows this introduction. Forthose who would like to learn more of the nature of combinativeplay and to go into the subject more deeply than is possible in abook of this kind, I particularly recommend Combination inChess by G. Negyesyi and J. Hegyi, Modern Chess Tactics byLudek Pachman, The Chess Sacrifice and The Art of Conibinationin Chess, both by Vladimir Vukovic.
