The Penguin Dictionary of Music: Sixth Edition (Penguin Reference Books S.)

A landmark in its field, The Penguin Dictionary of Music is now in its sixth edition and has been thoroughly revised and expanded. The additional entries, of which there are over 500, include musical instruments, recent compositions, new composers and rising stars of the concert and opera world, as well as a new subject area, classic musicals and their composers.
It covers opera and ballet as well as orchestral, solo, choral and chamber music. Detailed entries include noted performers past and present, composers and their works, instruments of every kind, musical terms and genres, orchestras and conductors - and even authors whose work has inspired musical composition. This dictionary is an ideal source of reference for anyone with an interest in music - whether professional or purely for enjoyment.

Arthur Jacobs is well-known both in his native England and in the United States as a critic, author, translator of librettos, lecturer and broadcaster.
