The Penrose Annual Volume Forty

The annual Review of the Graphic Arts of 1938. Green cloth. Slightly bumped at the top and the edges. Spine with traces of wear at the bottom. At the top small piece of tape with number. Typography and binding designed by Jan Tschichold who was invited to England by Lund Humphries in 1935 and commissioned in 1938 to design Volume forty of The Penrose Annual. It's perhaps the best example of Tschichold’s transitional period between the New Typography and Classicism. With the original dust wrapper laid in, folded and discoloured at the folds. Interior boards and opposite pages yellowed/discoloured. 160 text pages, 30 tipped-in printing samples + 56 pages of trade advertising. Many b/w and colour illustrations of typographic, graphic and photographic art by artists like Herbert Matter, E. McKnight-Kauffer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Herbert Bayer. Nice copy.
