The Pentecostal Paradox by G. J. Hocking is a thought evoking book that is jam-packed with fascinating stories that sound more like a saga. The Pentecostal Paradox looks at the central myth of Azusa Street and the folklore and legends attached to its beginnings. Added to this, the author juxtaposes the Californian gold rush and the San Francisco earthquake with Pentecostalism's origins.
And to think, this is only the first two chapters!
Why is this book different?
Most books on the Pentecostal movement today only cover the subject in general terms. That's where this new book differs. Set in California the Charismatic Cradle, the book explores the background in which the Pentecostals had their rise. After all, having launched initially with 50 or perhaps 60 adherents, the movement by 1970 rose to around 70 million followers. That's, believe it or not, a one-million-fold increase in just over sixty years.
The authors' goal is to provide a detailed analysis and critique of the Pentecostal, Charismatic, and Third Wave movements in the light of scripture.
The Pentecostal Paradox offers:
A unique look at Pentecostalism since its inception
A vast array of contemporary eyewitnesses' stories told in a narrative format.
A book that's written in a warm, clear, and engaging style, reaching readers with an up-to-date historical account of the Pentecostals, Charismatics, and third-wavers.
