About the Author
Chief Joseph was the leader of the Wallowa Nez Perces. This group was in turn part of the non-treaty Nez Perces who fled the U.S. Army into Montana after a series of engagements in Idaho in the summer of 1877. Joseph assumed leadership of the entire group of non-treaties at the Battle of the Bear Paw when he became the only chief left. He soon became known to white Americans as an eloquent speaker of great intelligence and dedication to his people.
