MeritsOne seems to be alone in fearing that when the tissue is gone, what little empathy and kindness that exists will go too, and the PHTs would evolve into very different beings, with very different goals. They have already burnt their way through four planets and torched every living organism on them in the process. Their search for utopia feels more to Merits like a death march into oblivion.

His attempts to manipulate their chemistry and design a more compassionate being, and his ultimate goal, to build the soul, have failed. The PHTs are as self-obsessed as they ever were.

He has concluded that they are a virus, and as a biologist, master chemist, super brain, it is up to him to eradicate them before they destroy the universe.
