Perceptions of the past in Southeast Asia

The historical traditions of Southeast Asia are many and varied, for the peoples of the region have been writing about their past for at least 700 years in a wide range of languages and styles. Only a collective enterprise like this book, bringing together 22 leading scholars, could begin to explore the development of Southeast Asian historical thinking as a whole. The book provides not merely a guide tot this multiplicity of approaches, but also an insight into the way Southeast Asians have sought to chart a course through the shifting ideological currents that have swirled around them.
