About this Item
A uniformly-bound collection of Thomas Byerley's Percy Anecdotes. Including anecdotes of: The Bar The Senate Shipwreck Travelling The Stage Music Industry Commerce Fashion Pastime Including engraved frontispieces and titles to each volume. Thomas Byerley (died 1826), pseudonyms Reuben Percy and Stephen Collet, was an English journalist and compiler of the Percy Anecdotes. He is best known for The Percy Anecdotes, 20 vols., London, 1821 3, 12mo. These volumes, which came out in forty-four monthly parts, were supposedly written by "Sholto and Reuben Percy, brothers of the Benedictine monastery of Mount Benger". Reuben Percy was Byerley, and Sholto Percy was Joseph Clinton Robertson. The name of the collection was taken from the Percy coffee-house in Rathbone Place in Fitzrovia, where Byerley and Robertson used to meet. Ten volumes of the original twenty, bound in five. In mottled calf bindings. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing and bumping. Internally, firmly bound, although missing the title page to one volume. Two joints are starting, and most hinges are strained. Pages are bright, though with some instances of spotting. Very Good. Seller Inventory # SET17-B-3
