WINNER OF THE 2025 WALTER CUMMINS SHORT FICTION BOOK AWARD
This collection of award-winning stories, set in mid-century Florida, wend their way through the skirmish lines of small-town life to tell, with humor and warmth, the tale of how a pair of loners learn the ways of love. Welcome to a snapshot of America that mingles the authentic landscape, rich in quotidian detail, with a secret dreamscape just beneath the surface.
This collection includes winners of the 2025 and 2021 Rash Award in Fiction, the Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize, the First Pages Prize, the Bumblebee Flash Fiction Award; runners-up in the Tusculum Review Fiction Prize and the Saturday Evening Post Great American Fiction Contest 2021 and 2023; and a finalist for The New Ohio Review Editors' Prize in Prose.
A teacher at Valencia College, Alan Sincic's fiction has appeared in Boulevard, New Ohio Review, The Greensboro Review, The Saturday Evening Post, Big Fiction Magazine, Terrain.org, A-3 Press, The Gateway Review, Cobalt, Overland, and elsewhere. His work has won contests sponsored by The Texas Observer, Driftwood Press, The Prism Review, Westchester Review, The Columbia Journal, Prime Number, Orison, Meridian, Azure, The Plentitudes, Hunger Mountain, Broad River Review, and others. After an MA in Lit at the University of Florida and a poetry fellowship at Columbia, Alan earned an MFA at Western New England University. He spent over a dozen years in NYC as a writer and performer—comic/satirical pieces that eventually became a pair of full-length plays (American Obsessions and Breaking Glass) at the Orlando International Fringe Festival.
