About the Author

Vladimir Loukonin (1932-1984) acted as the head of the Hermitage Oriental Department for two decades, assisted by his colleague Anatoli Ivanov, lead researcher. He has published over a dozen books, mostly on aspects of Parthian and Sassanian Iran and Central Asia.
