Circa 1917. Redferne (Percy) Hollinshead (1885-1937) was born in Suffolk, England. The family migrated to Ontario, Canada in 1892, when Redferne was six. He began singing solos in the Winnipeg Central Congregational Church, and on provincial tours with Winnipeg's Citizen Band. After a stay in London for study with Giovanni Clerici he returned to Toronto to teach at the Hambourg Conservatory. He settled in New York in 1917 and became the tenor soloist at Broadway's Grace Church. He frequently sang on the radio both in the USA and Canada, also making cylinders for Edison. He also recorded cylinders after 1926 as first tenor of the American Singers, a male quartet. This collection of his sheet music is written in his hand and is primarily Scottish Songs, many written by Robert Burns. The last song in this collection is an old plantation song called Darling Nelly Gray, an anti-slavery ballad written by Benjamin Hanby, and arranged by Harry . (?), and presented "To my dear friend, Redferne Hollinshead", and is in Harry's hand. There are 14 songs of sheet music with musical notation, words, and corrections. These being 1) My Nannie's Awa'l by Robert Burns 2) Bonnie Wee Thing by Robert Burns 3) Duncan Gray by Robert Burns 4) Highland Mary by Robert Burns 5) Auld Nicolson's Bonnie Ninnie, author unknown 6) Ca' the Yowes, collected by Robert Burns, and originally written by an Ayrshire poet - Isabel Pagan, to which Burns added an eighth stanza, later re-writing the Poem 7) Ho-Ro My Nut Brown Maiden by John Stuart Blackie, a Scottish poet 8) The Piper O' Dundee, a traditional folk tune adopted through the ages 9) Stay My Charmer by Robert Burns 10) Wi' a Hundred Pipers by Lady Carolina Oliphant Narne 11) Maiden of Morven, associated with both John McLeod and Father Sydney MacEwan 12) Turn Ye To Me by John Wilson, a Scottish poet who sometimes used the pseudonym Christopher North 13) Crookit Bawbee, a traditional Scottish Air 14) Darling Nelly Gray - an anti-slavery ballad. Bound in half cloth and paper, with a mounted label showing Redferne's name, with the covers showing edge wear.
