James H. Kidd (1840-1913) was a student at the University of Michigan when he ended his academic pursuits to join George Custer's Sixth Michigan Cavalry. He rose from lieutenant to colonel during the war, and fought valiantly, having been wounded several times.

He has published widely in scholarly and popular magazines, and has written several successful books including Phil Sheridan & His Army, The Apache Wars, and The Custer Reader. He is a familiar face on over 300 television programs from the Discovery to CBS to the History Channel, and has consulted with several major Hollywood directors on film projects, including Ron Howard and Jon Favreau.
