About this Item

first and only edition and printing (not stated); INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the ffep 'To Glenn / with every good / wish / from Michael'; from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert with his inscription on the ffep, extensive underlining and marginal notes, lower rear corner bumped, upper edge slightly bumped for about 2 cm, else clean, square, and little used, rated Near Fine; dj shows light shelfwear, 6 mm tear and very small chip at crown of spine, rated VG+; a pioneering study by the master Australian researcher of languages in contact, especially the contact of German with English there; would interest collectors of books on language contact in the wider sense; Clyne and I (Gilbert) worked in parallel for about a decade --- in the 1960s and early 1970s I was doing in the U.S. what he was doing in Australia, an interesting societal comparison with many similarities and also significant differences; at least from my point of view the association, and the notes in the book, could well prove of great interest to collectors interested in colonial German in English-speaking countries; hard covers are dark blue with gold-stamped lettering on the spine; dj is cream-colored with black or navy blue lettering on the front and spine; 8vo -- 222 x 144 mm; 138 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
