About this Item
1931. Julian Press, Newark, NJ. Hardcover. An English translation of Dr. Albert Moll's "Die Contrare Sexualempfindung" in1891.Translated by Maurice Popkin, PhD. 8vo (6 x 9 in). Brown cloth over boards with gilt spine lettering. .Cover is clean except for some small "pock" marks. Dr. Moll (1862-1939) was a contemporary of both Sigmund Freud (1856?1939) and Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) in Germany, all of them involved in research and writing on human sexuality and its effect on personal psychology. Much has been written on their rivalries and history has assigned Dr. Moll to the other men's shadows. Sexual inversion is a term used by sexologists, primarily in the late 19th and early 20th century, to refer to homosexuality. Dr. Moll's writings, at the time, changed the conversation particularly regarding the relationship to one's childhood sexuality. This work is written in an engaging, comprehensible style. Some observations come across as dated by the material that is over 130 years old. Still, considering the emerging 21st century attitudes on sexuality, this is an important historical document.
