Raised on the West Coast, he developed his climbing skills among the glaciers and peaks of the Southern Alps before becoming chief guide at the Hermitage at Mount Cook. He describes early expeditions, difficult ascents, guiding clients and the techniques required to climb major peaks with the relatively basic equipment then available. His achievements included numerous first ascents and pioneering routes on Mount Cook and other major peaks. Graham died while still writing his memoirs, and his story was completed by mountaineer John Pascoe.
