Synopsis

Of hundreds of attempted translations of the Phaistos Disc, the Pomerance effort was the first to be termed a »workable hypothesis» by an assemblage of scholars at the Third Cretological Congress in Rhethymnon, Crete in September 1971. Relying on recognition of star constellations and their movement through the seasons he offers the basis for the conclusion that the Phaistos Disc is actually a farmer's almanac. Proof of this interpretation is offered by the continuum of the compartments on the A side, matched with the same order of the appearance of the constellations as »played out» on the dome of the Hayden Planetarium in New York. Emphasis is also placed on the symbol language of the preliterate ancient world and the error of attempting to »read» the symbols phonetically.
