The Phantom Vale

Eleven-year-old Nathan Cole was never much of a reader—until he discovered a mysterious bookcase hidden in the attic. Once the property of his grandfather, Henry Hammond, the noted bookseller from Cambridge, Massachusetts, the bookcase called to Nathan from the moment he first found it. But this is no ordinary bookcase. The books that line its shelves have been saved for one reason: they each contain an unsolved mystery. What’s more, Nathan doesn’t choose the books he takes from the case¾they choose him. And now, another book has presented itself. In it is a mystery that dates back to the late 1800s: the baffling account of a boxcar that seemingly vanished into thin air, from a moving train, in a town that doesn’t exist. Only with the help of his best friend, Gina McDermott, can he hope to unravel a secret that has haunted a small New Hampshire town for generations. But Nathan and Gina aren’t alone. Someone is waiting. And watching.
