Contact with magic was subject to communal, social and political changes, which were made apparent, above all, through laws. In her study, Michaela Rucker defines the ancient conceptualities of magic and investigates the relationship of magic to the related fields of religion and medicine. In order to emphasize the close relationship between magic, religion and medicine, she had developed a tripartide division of the subject into magical actors, magical actions and magical materials. The legal elements for contact with magical actions and agents are analyzed through selected examples concerning their influence on magical processes. Particularly noteworthy are legal accusations against women, whose close association with magic has been postulated in the literary sources since the Homeric epics, which suggests how much reality and fictions overlapped with regard to magic. The focus of the investigation is Athens from the Classical period and Rome to the end of the first century A.D. The research offers explanatory approaches for the various legal understanding within both societies concerning contact with magic, especially its adaptation before the law.
