Wasser – Kraftstoff Gemische reduzieren sch�dliche Rohemissionen in Verbrennungs- motoren. Dabei sind Mikroemulsionen gew�hnlichen Emulsionen aufgrund ihrer thermodyna- mischen Stabilit�t und der Verteilung des Wassers auf der Nanoskala �berlegen. Strey und Mitarbeiter zeigten bereits 2003 in einer Patentanmeldung [DE10334897A1] den Nutzen von bikontinuierlich strukturierten Mikroemulsionen bei der Verbrennung in Dieselmotoren auf. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden Kraftstoffmikroemulsionen des Typs Wasser/Gefrier- schutzmittel – Kraftstoff – �ls�ure/Ethanolamin/�ls�urediethanolamid mit Wasseranteilen von bis zu 40 Gew.-% formuliert, die ein temperaturinvariantes Phasenverhalten aufweisen. Emissionen von Dieselmotoren, besonders Schwarzru� und NOX, wurden als Funktion des Wassergehaltes untersucht. Durch die Verwendung von vollst�ndig verbrennbaren, g�nstigen und aus Biomasse gewonnenen Tensiden, konnten Dieselmikroemulsionen im Hinblick auf Emissionen, zuk�nftige Preisentwicklung und Nachhaltigkeit optimiert werden. Des Weiteren erlaubte die Solubilisierung von Wasser in marinem Gas�l (MGO) eine Ausdehnung der Anwendung auf den heavy duty-Bereich von marinen off-shore-Energiegeneratoren. Schlie�lich wurden mit dem neuen Gas-to-Liquid Kraftstoff (GtL) ein vollst�ndig erneuerbarer und sauberer Mikroemulsionskraftstoff formuliert. Die Struktur optimaler Wasser – Kraftstoffmikroemulsionen wurde mittels Kleinwinkelneutronenstreuung (SANS), dynamischer Lichtstreuung (DLS), Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie (TEM) und Kernmagnetresonanz (NMR-) Diffusometrie sowie Messungen der elektrischen Leitf�higkeit untersucht und nachgewiesen. Gemeinsam ergaben diese sich gegenseitig erg�nzenden Techniken ein in sich konsistentes Bild einer bikontinuierlichen Struktur. Mit der vorliegenden Arbeit gewinnt man ein tiefes Verst�ndnis von Kraftstoffmikroemulsionen mit einer Einordnung der Eigenschaften in den wissenschaftlichen Kontext. In Zusammenarbeit mit den heavy-duty-Motorenbauern mtu und MAN konnte eine simultane und drastische Reduktion des Schwarzru�es um bis zu 96 % sowie der Stickoxide um bis zu 60 %, mehr als bisher je erreicht, nachgewiesen werden bei gleichzeitigem R�ckgang des spezifischen Verbrauchs.
