This information exchange takesplace more and more at a global level, so it becomescrucial to be able to transmit ever larger amounts ofinformation over very long optical-fibre transmissionlinks. At the same time, the sobering up after theburst of the dot-com bubble in 2000-2001 has madecost a major consideration in any upgrading solution.This translates into the need for modulationtechniques that allow for the transmission of highbit rates over large distances at minimum cost. Thisbook presents three phase-modulation techniques thatallow the upgrade of existing transmission links tohigher bit rates using cost-effective On-Off keyingand direct detection. This is achieved thanks to thesuppression of intra-channel non-linear effects, suchas IFWM which become a major impairment for bit ratesof 40 Gb/s and above. The techniques are examinedanalytically, tested in numerical simulations, andverified in transmission experiments.

About the Author

Marco Forzati holds a MSc degree from Politecnico di Milano,Italy and a PhD degree from Chalmers University of Technology,Sweden, both in Electrical Engineering. He currently is seniorscientist at research firm Acreo AB in Stockholm, where he workson fibre-optic transmission and on the economic impact oftelecommunications technologies.
