A candid portrait of the Duke of Edinburgh examines his roles as father, husband, and royal consort and assesses the impact on the British monarchy of this frequently misrepresented member of British royalty
Reviews:
A man of contradictions emerges in this portrait of the Queen of England's consort by Fleet Street journalist Hall. Prince Philip is seen as not entirely likable, a man who "has walked a tightrope for all his married life." Aggressive by temperament, he weathered the storm his Germanic origins roused among the English when he married into the monarchy; although dominant by nature, he has accepted his public position of appearing at least one pace behind his wife. In private, Philip is an exponent of machismo, finding reflection of this spirit more in his daughter, Anne, an accomplished horsewoman, than in his three sons, according to Hall. Despite gossip about his marital straying, it is Philip's role as family man and husband to the queen that enhances the enduring image of the British monarchy, the author maintains in this balanced, if unfinished, picture of a man "who is obsessed with being top dog." Hall, women's editor of English newspaper News of the World for 17 years, analyzes and documents the difficult life of Prince Philip, husband of Britain's queen. Philip's role is an odd one and the man himself an intriguing mix of ambition and dedication to serving his country. Raised as a homeless and often parentless prince of Greece (though actually of Danish and English ancestry), he decided early on to marry Elizabeth, thus carving out a job for himself. Yet he was devastated when his plans for a naval career ended with the unexpectedly early death of George VI and thus Elizabeth's accession to the throne. Hall concludes that because Philip got what he wanted, he should be a bit more gracious about such irritants as publicity. Katharine Galloway Garstka, Intergraph Corp., Huntsville, Ala.
