The Philosophical And Mathematical Commentaries Of Proclus On The First Book Of Euclid's Elements by Proclus. This work presents a composite classical treatise in which Proclus, a prominent Neoplatonist philosopher, offers extended commentary on Euclid's Elements, interweaving mathematical exposition with Platonic theology, metaphysical principles, and the ascent of the soul. The volume compiles Proclus's Discourses on the nature and unity of mathematical beings, the Platonic doctrine of ideas, demonstrative syllogism, and the place of geometry within a broader philosophical framework. It includes sections on the origin and utility of geometry, the relation between form and matter, and the cognition of universals via mathematical forms. The text further expands with expositions on the Platonic restoration by later Platonists, and translations from Proclus's Theological Elements. Together, these pieces illustrate how geometry functions as a pathway to intelligible truth, bridging mathematics and metaphysics, and revealing geometry’s role in shaping Platonic theology and rational inquiry.
