The Philosophy of Life and Philosophy of Language: German Romantic Lectures on Consciousness, Revelation, Speech, and Culture

The Philosophy of Life and Philosophy of Language gathers Friedrich von Schlegel's mature reflections on the relation between consciousness, history, revelation, and speech. Written in the elevated, aphoristic, and synthetic manner characteristic of late German Romantic thought, the work moves beyond systematic abstraction toward an organic vision of human existence. Its lectures place language at the center of culture, treating it not as a mere instrument but as the living medium of memory, imagination, and spiritual truth. Schlegel, a central figure of the Jena Romantic circle, had already transformed European criticism through his theories of irony, fragment, myth, and progressive universal poetry. His later intellectual development, marked by historical scholarship, comparative philology, and conversion to Catholicism, informs this book's concern with tradition and transcendence. The lectures reflect a thinker seeking to reconcile Romantic inwardness with religious and historical order. This volume is recommended to readers interested in Romantic philosophy, the history of linguistics, theology, and literary theory. It rewards patient attention, offering not a technical manual but a profound meditation on how life becomes intelligible through language, culture, and the search for ultimate meaning.
